Multnomah County commissioners are set to vote next week on a $2.5 million settlement to the estate of Clemente Pineda, who died in the Multnomah County Detention Center while detoxing from fentanyl Aug. 1, 2023. Pineda died after vomiting over the course of 24 to 48 hours while complaining of gastrointestinal symptoms “for days,” according to a medical examiner’s report.

Authorities reported 49 homes destroyed in the Rowena fire even as improving conditions prompted officials to ease evacuation orders for several hundred Wasco County homes. The tally of destroyed homes is an early count, the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office said Friday. “This is not a comprehensive list of damaged or destroyed homes,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “(We) expect that number to grow.”No fatalities have been reported in the fire.

The Rowena fire held steady overnight, with firefighters holding the blaze at around 3,800 acres despite challenging winds, officials said Friday morning. The fire, believed to have been caused by human activity, ignited Wednesday afternoon in Wasco County and exploded within 24 hours, destroying multiple homes and forcing hundreds to evacuate from the Columbia Gorge community west of The Dalles.

A Warrenton man who has fought skin and brain cancer won a $1 million Powerball prize Saturday, the Oregon Lottery said. Aaron Bendickson, 48, was medically retired from the U.S. Army after he was diagnosed with skin cancer at 23, the lottery said. He has since also battled brain cancer. In 2022, Bendickson quit smoking, then funneled the money he previously spent on cigarettes towards Scratch-its and quick pick draw games.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has identified Deputy Matt Hansen as the officer who shot a man Friday in Portland’s Parkrose neighborhood after the man allegedly pointed a handgun at police. Portland police had initially responded to a call about a fight between two men in the 4600 block of Northeast 116th Avenue around 3:45 p.m. Officers detained a man briefly but released him, finding no victim, police said in a statement the day of the incident.
