DiscussionThis is the largest study of antibiotic pharmacokinetics performed in infected pleural effusions. We have demonstrated that commonly used antibiotics such as amoxicillin, metronidazole, piperacillin-tazobactam and clindamycin reach levels within the pleural fluid equivalent to that in the blood and above the MIC for bacteria known to cause pleural infection.
