So that’s why they’re called the Dodgers. For the better part of the last two weeks, the Los Angeles baseball franchise has evaded calls from fans begging that it speak up and show support for communities terrorized by ongoing immigration raids taking place across the Southland. When thousands of Angelenos took to the streets for a series of protests, the Dodgers buried their heads in the sandlot and pretended the unrest wasn’t happening.

A politician with a bend toward authoritarianism sending in armed troops in order to create the optics that will help him manufacture consent to further consolidate power. Unauthorized workers subjected to state-sanctioned terror from immigration officers. Everyday citizens, galvanized and radicalized by the presence of the military in their city, choosing to fight back.

By the time Cuco arrived at Dodger Stadium on a recent Tuesday evening, thousands of fans were already lined up outside the venue’s gates, waiting to be let in. Though the matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks wouldn’t begin for another two hours, these Doyer diehards made their way to Chavez Ravine early to catch the pre-game festivities.

I still remember the goal that made me feel lucky for living in Los Angeles during the era of Carlos Vela. It was a cool Wednesday night in August 2019, and I was standing in the 200-level section of what is now known as BMO Stadium, trying to process what I had just seen. In the 41st minute of the match against the visiting San Jose Earthquakes, Los Angeles Football Club winger Diego Rossi fed Vela the ball a few yards outside the opponent’s box.
