Decades of muscle memory guide her hands as she logs the appointment while sharing a laugh with a customer she has known for more than a decade. Next to Van, her niece drills down another customer’s acrylics, glittery plastic dust catching sunlight through a haze of acetone. Across the room, Van’s sister hums quietly as she lacquers an intricate design on another customer’s nails.
