Hurricane Helene has been undergoing rapid intensification and now stands with winds of 120 mph. At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, maximum sustained winds were at 45 mph, then at 10 Wednesday, Oct. 3, winds were at 80 mph. Winds have now increased to 120 mph. THAT is the classic definition of rapid intensification: when winds increase by 35 mph or more in 24 hours or less! Couldn’t be more spot on. What does that mean?

Published: May 17, 2024, 10:19 AMPublished: May 17, 2024, 10:19 AMThe National Weather Service will make final determinations about just what weather phenomenon moved across Houston yesterday, but my best guess this morning is that we had a “Derecho”, pronounced Deh-RAY-cho (Spanish for “straight”). Let me explain. By definition, a Derecho creates straight line wind damage which extends more than 240 miles and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph or greater along most of its length.
