The Charlotte city budget was proposed this week, but a closed session to preemptively settle a potential lawsuit between the city and CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings overshadowed that announcement. The issue stems from text messages Jennings received from now-former council memberTariq Bokhari last year saying he would try to get Jennings fired and work to “cripple his legacy.” The two had been fighting over whether CMPD officers should be allowed to wear outer-carrier protective vests.

The City of Charlotte proposed its budget for the next fiscal year on Monday. After implementing a property tax increase last year for the first time in six years, the will be no property tax increase this year. That said, fees are going up for stormwater and sewer services. Charlotte's animal shelter will separate from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and be overseen by the Department of General Services.

This week marked the one-year anniversary of the deadliest day for law enforcement in Charlotte. On April 29, 2024, four officers were killed while serving a warrant. They were CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, N.C. Department of Adult Corrections officers Sam Poloche and Alden Elliot, and U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks. The suspect was also killed. We look back on that day and the remembrance ceremonies held this week.

The first 100 days have been a landmark for presidential administrations since Franklin Roosevelt took office in 1933 and began to roll out programs related to the New Deal. Trump has used the first 100 days of his second stint in the White House to make good on many of his promises. He’s deported migrants, slashed government agencies and taken aim at diversity initiatives. This has had ripple effects across the country and in North Carolina.

The CMS Board of Education voted to approve Superintendent Crystal Hill’s proposed budget, though three board members opposed the $2.1 billion budget. The vote came after debate over teacher salary increases. Some of those who were against the budget said the state isn’t doing enough to address teacher pay and that more needs to be done locally to make up for that shortcoming.
