The city of Charlotte recommended that City Council deny a real estate investment and development company funding for the Brooklyn Village project. The Peebles Corporation, which is based in Miami, wanted Charlotte to give $13.5 million from its Housing Trust Fund, but the city’s Housing and Neighborhood Services said that’s too much money at this time. Elsewhere on Council, Republican Tariq Bokhari is set to officially leave office on Sunday.

Among the people the Trump administration sent to a prison in El Salvador recently was a man living in the Charlotte area. Julio Zambrano Perez was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shortly before his wife gave birth to their second child in February. It came during a routine check-in appointment. Zambrano Perez’s family said ICE misidentified him as a gang member because of his tattoos. His story was the subject of a recent profile in Mother Jones.

As the second Trump administration has made cuts across federal agencies in the first few months since reentering Washington, those cuts are having a trickle-down effect. Research is stopping, local governments are revisiting their priorities, and groups whose missions run counter to the administration are having to adjust. Take climate and other environmental goals, for example: President Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement again in January.

Mecklenburg County commissioners have chosen a new county manager. Mike Bryant will replace Dena Diorio, who has held the position since 2013. Diorio is retiring at the end of June. Bryant previously served as deputy county manager. Well-timed rain has helped firefighters contain wildfires in western North Carolina. A statewide burn ban was lifted earlier in the week. Still, spring wildfire season continues and officials are warning folks to stay vigilant and burn safely.
