LACONIA — The city's new paramedicine program has already served more than 40 people through its first month, Fire Chief Tim Joubert told councilors during a budget meeting Tuesday night. Councilors gathered at City Hall downtown on May 27 to review the proposed budgets of the fire and parks and recreation departments. “This is something that I’ve been passionate about since I’ve been here,” Joubert said.

LACONIA — The city may soon have more regulations around its noise ordinance, namely times during which it is enforced. Councilors at their meeting on Tuesday night set a public hearing for a potential amendment to the noise ordinance, defining time periods of use for certain loud activities or machinery, during their first meeting in June. The public hearing is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, June 9, at City Hall downtown. The vote on the public hearing was unanimous.

LACONIA — Nearly 50 years after he went missing while serving in Korea, Laconia native and U.S. Army Pfc. George A. Curley Jr. has finally been accounted for, and he’s coming home. The remains of Curley, who was killed at age 18 while serving in the Korean War, were identified on March 3, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Staff at the agency sent out notice in late April, after delivering a full briefing to members of Curley's family. His remains will be buried in Laconia in June.

LACONIA — A committee tasked with finding the best use of a city-owned property on Old North Main Street is set to make their recommendations to council. The ad-hoc committee met for the final time on Thursday night, and is expected to share their endorsement in the coming weeks. The property, located at the intersection of Old North Main and Parade Road, is roughly 10 acres in size and essentially empty at present.

LACONIA — City Finance Director Glen Smith told councilors the costs for managing the municipal welfare program continue climbing during a budget meeting on Tuesday night. Ninety four percent of the city’s welfare expenses are associated with housing. The total amount spent to fulfill welfare vouchers across various categories has steadily increased each year since 2021. In fiscal year 2021, the total spent by the city for its welfare program was $24,109, at a relative cost of $330 per voucher.
