SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — As Memorial Day weekend kicks off, thousands of people are heading to the rivers of San Joaquin County to jet ski, boat and sail. Alongside them, sheriff’s deputies are stepping up patrols to ensure safety on the water. “Now with most of the lakes closed due to the mussels, we’re expecting it to be even busier than in years past,” said Deputy John Canepa of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif. — Lake Camanche, a popular Memorial Day destination in Northern California, is seeing pushback from long-time visitors after new regulations put a halt to some boat use and all alcohol consumption. The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), which manages the lake, announced that boat launches will be closed to all vessels this summer, including kayaks and inflatable toys, in an effort to prevent the introduction of the invasive golden mussel species.

STOCKTON, Calif. — A Stockton man is facing criminal charges after authorities say he embezzled tens of thousands of dollars from a nonprofit golf program serving underprivileged youth in San Joaquin County. Joseph Smith, former executive director of First Tee of San Joaquin, was arrested earlier this week after an internal investigation conducted by the nonprofit revealed approximately $85,000 in missing funds, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
