STOCKTON, Calif. — The death of Pope Francis has sent waves of grief through Catholic communities around the world, and in Stockton. Despite the Easter holiday just a day prior, many Catholic churches that were originally scheduled to close reopened their doors for mourning. Among them was the Cathedral of the Annunciation, where the usual Easter joy gave way to solemn prayers. A special rosary and mass to honor Pope Francis were set at the church for 7 p.m. Monday.

STOCKTON, Calif. — As many families gathered in churches across the country to celebrate Easter, one Stockton pastor says a large number of immigrant families in his congregation stayed home out of fear of immigration enforcement. At the Lutheran Church of Saint Mary the Pilgrim, the Rev. Nelson Rabell-González said church attendance during Holy Week dropped by an estimated 80%.

The Stockton Kings, the G League affiliate of the Sacramento Kings, defeated the Osceola Magic in Florida last week to claim the 2024 NBA G League championship. On Saturday, hundreds of fans packed into the Adventist Health Arena to welcome the team home and catch a glimpse of the championship trophy.

STOCKTON, Calif. — A $1.39 billion federal project to improve flood protection in San Joaquin County officially broke ground Friday, launching construction on a 24-mile-long levee system meant to safeguard more than 235,000 residents in north and central Stockton. Led by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the work is focused initially on strengthening the levee along Tenmile Slough, which protects the Brookside neighborhood. It's been dubbed the Lower San Joaquin River Project.

MODESTO, Calif. — The estate and wife of a prominent Modesto attorney who died after being wrongfully accused of murder will receive a significant portion of a $22.5 million settlement approved this week by Stanislaus County. Frank Carson, a former district attorney candidate and well-known defense lawyer, was arrested in connection with the 2012 death of missing Turlock man Korey Kauffman.
