A former New Orleans Police Department sergeant affectionately known as the “dancing cop” has died after developing ALS. Leroy-Joseph "L.J." Compascio Smith, 58, died Feb. 21. He’d been diagnosed with ALS, a neuromuscular sickness commonly known as Lou Gehring’s disease, in late 2023 and had lost all movement in his arms. The disease hadn’t yet affected mobility in his lower limbs, and he danced up until his death, his sister, Susan Smith, said Friday.

Authorities are searching for a man accused of rape and child sex trafficking who allegedly fled Indiana for Tangipahoa Parish after Christmas last year, the Hammond Police Department said. Hammond police, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals released Antonio Raemone Lewis Jr.'s photo on social media Friday. A St. Tammany Parish jury convicted a Mandeville man of rape and sexual battery last week after four hours deliberating, the northshore district attorney's office said. Damien Chance White, 43, was found guilty of the first-degree rape of a child and two counts of the sexual battery of a child under 13 on Feb. 28 after a five-day trial.

A Morgan City man died in a four-wheeler crash in St. Charles Parish Sunday, according to Louisiana State Police. Tammy Flowers, 28, was driving a Can-Am Outlander ATV east on La. 631 at 6 p.m. Sunday with a passenger, 22-year-old Bret Flowers, when the vehicle crossed the center line and drove off of the highway, state police said. It struck an unoccupied Jeep Cherokee. Bret Flowers was critically injured, and he died at a local hospital Wednesday.

A U.S. district judge sentenced three men to decades in prison earlier this month after they conspired to rob a federal agent during an undercover drug deal in 2023. Michael Lott, Dianta Tropez and Vernell Woodard pleaded guilty to multiple charges in connection with the attempted armed robbery and injury of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
