HANNAH COLLINS | The News The 2025 Washington County Youth Fair took place February 26 – March 1 at the Washington County Ag Center. More than 400 youth exhibited nearly 700 projects, including arts & crafts, baked goods, plants, and more. Participants competed in four age divisions: Cloverbud (5-7), Junior (8-10), Intermediate (11-13), and Senior (14-18).

Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies arrested subjects from yesterday whopossessed out of county warrants on two unrelated cases. According to a release by WCSO February 14, two subjects, 36 year old, Tiffany Lynn Holyfield, and 44 year old, Shane Clinton McKinney, were located at an address on Pioneer Rd. According to WCSO, both suspects had outstanding warrants from Calhoun County for Grand Theft.

Washington County Fire Services (WCFS) has received a donation of pet oxygen masks. According to a press release by WCFS, these are specialized masks that are a much-needed addition to their department, as they allow first responders to assist pets suffering from smoke inhalation- whether they are conscious or in need of resuscitation after exposure of harmful fumes.

STAFF REPORTFlorida Highway Patrol (FHP) has released information regarding the Vernon Elementary School Librarian, Gail Seaboch, who passed away unexpectedly January 16. According to FHP Seaboch suffered what appeared to be a medical issue. The vehicle veered off the south side of the roadway, striking a group of small trees at the edge of a wood line. Two athletes from Vernon High School made history at the inaugural Rural Girls Weightlifting State Championship January 13. Rashall Peterson claimed 6th place in the Traditional category, while Tamia Potter secured 2nd place in both the Olympic and Traditional categories. Abigail Brown, a sophomore at VHS, placed 10th in the Olympic category. Their success highlights the growing opportunities for young women in weightlifting, as supported by the Florida High School Athletic Association.

Washington County schools including Vernon Middle School, Chipley High School, and Roulhac Middle School competed in the Florida State Beta Convention in Orlando held on January 8 through January 11. Students in elementary, junior, and senior divisions compete for awards in various STEM, creative, and academic competitions. Additionally, the National Beta Club organization holds polls each year for state and national titles that any beta student can enter in and start their own campaign.

According to a report from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, twin brothers have been arrested and are facing felony charges following allegations of prolonged sexual abuse. Sheriff Kevin Crews announced the arrests on January 15, detailing the culmination of an extensive investigation into the alleged crimes. The investigation began after victims came forward with allegations that Donald Ray Hawkins and Ronald Gene Hawkins had subjected them to sexual abuse over the course of several years.

A man was arrested after leading deputies on a vehicle pursuit, which was followed by a foot chase, yesterday morning. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop near 5th Street and Gibson Ave. The driver of a gray sedan, however, continued to flee at a high speed after the deputy activated his emergency lights and sirens. The pursuit continued along Old Bonifay Rd, and the vehicle eventually turned onto 2nd Street, pulling into a residence and behind the house.
