Washington County has now reached its bicentennial, which the Tourist Development Council (TDC) is excited to recognize and celebrate. The Washington County Board of County Commissioners, Tourist Development Council, Historical Society, and Vernon Historical Society are collaborating to bring a long celebration marking the county’s 200th anniversary. In September 2024, key stakeholders, including municipalities and civic organizations, joined a planning meeting at the government annex.

A man was arrested after leading deputies on a vehicle pursuit, which was followed by a foot chase, yesterday morning. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop near 5th Street and Gibson Ave. The driver of a gray sedan, however, continued to flee at a high speed after the deputy activated his emergency lights and sirens. The pursuit continued along Old Bonifay Rd, and the vehicle eventually turned onto 2nd Street, pulling into a residence and behind the house.

Two athletes from Chipley High School have achieved the qualification standards set by USA Weightlifting (USAW) to compete in the 2024 National Championships, an event showcasing Olympic weightlifting talent across the nation. Under the guidance of Coach Allie Rudd, both lifters will represent Chipley Olympic Weightlifting in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this June.

KINSLEY COOK | The NewsThe beginning of February sets off Vernon High School’s 2025 baseball season. Whether the team is practicing or playing a game, a newly constructed bullpen, along with other improvements, are promised to add to VHS’ home field advantage. Head Coach Travis Scorza and assistant coaches Colby Chance and Russel Stafford have poured their time since August 2024 completing projects for the field.

Katherine Steverson, a Washington County local, recently completed and published her first children’s book, Silas’ Way. She began the writing process in early 2024 and announced its release on Amazon for purchase on December 11. “I wanted a way to share a little bit of him with others, so they can see that children like Silas are an incredible gift,” said Steverson. The book is inspired by Garrett and Katherine Steverson’s 5-year-old son, Silas, who is diagnosed with autism.

Mia Wilson: A Leader on and off the Court : Mia Wilson, 17, is the varsity captain for the Chipley High School volleyball team, where she shines as a middle hitter and blocker.
