All Boys Aren’t Blue, George M. Johnson’s YA memoir about growing up Black and queer, surpassed Maia Kobabe’s Gender-Queer, which had topped the list two years in a row, as the most challenged title of last year.

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe is the most challenged book in America for the third year in a row. In the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2023, released by ALA today, All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson is No. 2 for the second straight year. Many of the titles are the same as in 2022, with seven from last year's list among the most targeted again. In the third spot, This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson replaces Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, which dropped to No. 6.

The nonprofit Visit Philadelphia, “the region’s official leisure tourism marketing agency,” has joined forces with Little Free Library to bring locals and tourists to the Little Free(dom) Library to celebrate Black History Month. According to Penn America, Black authors have been at a disadvantage when it comes to reaching a wide range of readers since over 30 states have removed certain books penned by Black authors.

The American Library Association (ALA) documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources in 2022, the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. The unparalleled number of reported book challenges in 2022 nearly doubles the 729 book challenges reported in 2021. In 2022, there were 45 challenges on more than 30 books in Massachusetts, according to The American Library Association.
