Nothing here but candy canes and lollipops. Yet today, nothing could be further from the truth. And I’m not even talking about 'drag queens' reading to pre-schoolers, although that horror readily assaults child innocence in many local libraries.

Weeks after Utah became the first state to pass a law allowing statewide book bans, it has released the first list of books that will be banned in every public school in the state. The United States has experienced an unprecedented rise in book bans and challenges as conservatives lead the book-banning movement. In recent years, numerous Republican states have begun passing legislation to make it easier for book bans to occur.

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe is the most challenged book in America for the third year in a row. In the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2023, released by ALA today, All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson is No. 2 for the second straight year. Many of the titles are the same as in 2022, with seven from last year's list among the most targeted again. In the third spot, This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson replaces Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, which dropped to No. 6.

MENOMONEE FALLS — A Menomonee Falls School Board member is calling for the return of 33 books that were pulled from the high school library. Board member Keri Duce posted on her public Facebook page, alleging Policy 872 was not properly followed. On Oct. 20, 33 books were taken from the shelves of Menomonee Falls High School.
