Months after a fire destroyed much of the Derrick Street homeless camp, the City of Huntsville is preparing to reopen the site with significant improvements. Once littered with years of debris and trash, the camp has undergone a complete overhaul to make it a safer and cleaner space. City officials have installed a new metal privacy fence with emergency vehicle access on both Derrick St. and Hall Ave. There is also a fresh asphalt slab where residents will soon have designated living spaces.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAAY) – Family and friends of Marquez Williams gathered Monday for a balloon release, marking one year since he was killed in a hit-and-run. The event took place at Williams' graveside, where loved ones came together to celebrate his life and renew their call for justice. According to Huntsville police, 29-year-old Williams was struck and killed on April 15, 2024, by a stolen pickup truck on North Memorial Parkway.
