A man in Victoria's High Country will have to rebuild the house he has been constructing for months after it was completely devastated by extreme wind. Jed Culican says wild weather hit his home in Piries, near Mansfield, at about 5pm on Sunday and destroyed everything except for the back half of the house. Mr Culican was with his daughter Gabrielle in the shed he has been living in while he was building the main house when the wind arrived.

As the sun rises on Mount Buller, Boris Standish is already on the slopes. Long before the ski lifts start turning, the 19-year-old can be spotted via the snow cams on the Bourke Street ski run, climbing up the mountain with his cross-country skis on. He is one of many Aussies spending their Southern Hemisphere winter training hard in the hope of making the 2026 Winter Olympics. Standish competes in biathlon, an event that combines cross-country skiing with target shooting.

When seven skiers made the trek up Mount Buller over a weekend in 1924, little did they know they were pioneering what would become one of the country's most popular snow destinations. The Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) members were inspired by a photograph of the mountain with snow-capped peaks taken in Mansfield. "It looked almost close enough to touch," said Michelle Stevenson, curator of the National Alpine Museum of Australia.
