    A federal judge has just ordered the release of Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University professor and postdoctoral scholar who was arrested by immigration authorities in Northern Virginia in March. U.S. District Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles said Wednesday Khan Suri has not been accused of or convicted of a crime. She said the order for his release is in the public interest because it will disrupt the chilling effect his detention has had on protected political speech.

    NBC WashingtonAn inmate was killed in a astabbing at the D.C. jail on Monday, police say. Officers found 29-year-old Carlos Shelley suffering from apparent stab wounds about 2:30 p.m., police said. Medics came to the D.C. Central Detention Facility on D Street SE and pronounced Shelley dead at the scene. The Metropolitan Police Department said it is investigating the killing. Police did not give any information about a suspect or what might have led up to the stabbing.

    Amtrak and MARC passengers in D.C. can expect delays Tuesday after a massive warehouse fire in Baltimore disrupted train service in the Northeast. The fire broke out Monday evening at a vacant mattress warehouse in West Baltimore that's close to train tracks, putting service to a halt. Although it's contained, the Baltimore City Fire Department said firefighters were still working Tuesday morning to put out hot spots and extinguish the "deep seated" fire. No injuries have been reported.

    Passing a Fairfax County, Virginia, school bus while students are getting on or off will now cost drivers $250. The county and Fairfax County Public Schools installed cameras on 50 school buses earlier this year to catch drivers who illegally pass when bus drivers deploy the stop-arms - the flashing stop signs that signal children are loading or unloading. As of Monday, the 30-day warning period is over and drivers who don't stop will get tickets in the mail.
