New perk: Easily find new routes and hidden gems, upcoming running events, and more near you. Your weekly Local Running Newsletter has everything you need to lace up! Subscribe today. It was last fall when I realized that everything had changed. First there were the back-to-back high-country rides where my friends and I were the only ones on mountain bikes without motors. Then there was the eleven-mile climb where a hiker squinted at my crankset, exclaimed, "No battery!" and began to clap.

Two summers ago, I went shopping for a mountain bike group ride. I'd just moved to the Lake Tahoe area, and everywhere else I'd lived, races and group rides were how I'd made friends. I knew that if I could find a good weekly ride, I would find my new community. The first ride I checked out had only three participants, including myself. The next was attended by women who seemed mostly new to one another.

Belated, but I must plug this beautiful piece by writer Kevin Chroust about the sword his grandfather found on a Japanese beach in the final days of WW2, & their quest to return it 80 years later. It was a joy to edit this piece for Outside, and the story is so much fun to read.

5. "My Quest to Find the Owner of a Mysterious WWII Japanese Sword," Kevin Chroust @OutsideMagazine "This is a fun detective piece and a fascinating history lesson, but, above all, it is a personal story." https://t.co/pSsSc0JXeq

Thrilled to share that a story I wrote for @BicyclingMag, "Cycling's Silent Epidemic," was nominated for a National Magazine Award. Thank you to @ASME1963 for selecting it, and to editor @leahflickinger for always believing in me & making my work better. https://t.co/lTNJmGA6Zj https://t.co/asnbsl4tPM
