The perils, pitfalls and positives of owning your own venue was one of the topics tackled at this year’s Edinburgh Bar Show. The event, now in its second year, was organised by Panda & Sons owner Iain McPherson and Edinburgh Cocktail Week founders Jamie Faulds and Gary Anderson and ran over four days in early April. Each day featured a range of seminars during the afternoon, followed by bar takeovers and parties in the evenings. It was free to attend for anyone working in hospitality.

Easter trading was a mixed bag this year as the trade braces for the impact of National Insurance increases. That was the message from operators contacted by SLTN, who reported mixed fortunes over the Easter bank holiday weekend. In Glasgow, Matthew Collins of The Iron Duke said the holiday brought ‘a decent boost’ with “strong trading on Good Friday and Easter Sunday in particular—better than we expected for the time of year”.

A clampdown on the licensed hours of Peterhead’s popular Bar 57 nightclub has been successfully appealed at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, winning the operators a fresh hearing from Aberdeen Licensing Board. The appeal was sought to challenge the outcome of a licence review held at the request of Police Scotland in October 2024. At that hearing, which followed a spate of violent incidents, Aberdeenshire Licensing Board cut the premises’ trading hours to 2am, and imposed a midnight curfew.
