The origins of 420 – an unofficial marijuana holiday observed on April 20 – are unknown. Some say it was first used in the 1970s by a group of students as the time of day they would get together and smoke; others say it comes from police code of marijuana possession; still others say it comes from hippie culture and spread among fans of the band The Grateful Dead.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A man was detained early Sunday morning in the Short North neighborhood after a drive-by shootout, which prompted a Columbus police officer to open fire. Columbus police said a special duty officer just finished his shift near a bar in the neighborhood and then saw a shootout occur near East Hubbard Avenue and North Pearl Street just before 2:30 a.m.The shootout was between a man standing outside a parking garage and multiple occupants of a dark pickup truck.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — More cases of the avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, have been detected in Ohio in recent weeks. According to the United Nations, it has killed more than 300 million birds worldwide and one person in the U.S. Health officials still said the risk for the public is low right now but a professor at Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine said the medical community has been scrambling to slow down the spread.

HILLIARD, Ohio (WCMH) — It’s been a year and half since the Hilliard Food Pantry Plus went up in flames, but volunteers didn’t let that stop them and have been working hard to recover ever since. After losing their location on Cemetery Road, the pantry moved to Hilliard Methodist United Church. That’s where the Share Closet was born, allowing community members to come in for clothing and small appliances.

According to a social media post by Corey Taylor, he and a witness alerted police that individuals had broken into his truck by shattering a window shortly after 5 a.m. The truck was parked in front of Taylor’s residence on Kelso Road.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Another successful year of collecting toys for central Ohio children in need is in the books. On Saturday, NBC4 hosted its 46th annual Firefighters 4 Kids Toy Drive along with community partners. “Just knowing that we make a difference. If we didn’t do this some kids wouldn’t get Christmas so it’s a big deal for us,” said Chris Williams, a donor at Shaffer Entertainment. Thousands of toys were collected from the community and this all started back in the 1970’s.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — House Bill 33 went into effect more than a year ago, requiring all Ohio school coaches to receive mental health training certification. Now, new funding is aimed at expanding the training to community-based sports groups. “We’ve got to equip everybody to better work with kids, kids in this capacity because a lot of them are struggling and we think coaches are part of that answer,” Dr. Dawn Anderson-Butcher, director of Teaching and Research at LiFEsports, said.
