The greatest legacies of history are often a difficult thing to reconcile with the mundane realities of real people and places. Often, the more momentous an occasion or person’s life is to the world that follows it, the more distant and fanciful the idea becomes. It’s particularly hard with people who leave a dent in the world but then are taken from it, leaving only legacy and ever-fading memories of the day-to-day normality from which they sprang.

Raise a glass and celebrate these landlords who were serving up frothy ale and conversation in Fife pubs in 1978. There were so many pubs to choose from. Where would you have gone? The Clipper Lounge at the Cutty Sark in Kirkcaldy? Maybe you would have enjoyed a pint of Diamond Heavy and toasted mince sandwiches “with or without curry” in the Bruce Tavern in Dunfermline? Some of the famous names included The Broadway Bar, The George, The Galleon Bar, The Ivanhoe Bar, The Robin Hood Bar, The Scout Bar and The Three Barrels.

We dive into our achieves for photos showing life in Dundee’s Charleston housing estate in the 1980s and 1990s. Inner city overcrowding meant the housing emphasis in Dundee shifted from central areas to peripheral sites in the 1940s. “Model” estates like the 1,200 homes at Charleston were created. People moved in droves from the decaying heart of the city to the brave new world. Suburbia was far from utopia. Charleston has had its fair share of ups and downs over the decades.
