Taypark Hotel is the lost Broughty Ferry villa with a stunning view where thousands of people attended weddings and parties. Its ample grounds at 30 Dundee Road went right down to the edge of the Tay. It was a famous hotel which welcomed generations of visitors. The grounds were once used for a teen magazine photo shoot with the Rolling Stones before the band performed at the Caird Hall in May 1965. Its rooms and bar were a bustling social hub and meeting place.

Willie Carson fell under the spell of a horse racing film from a sixpenny seat at the Allanpark Cinema in Stirling. A decade later he was weaving his own racecourse magic. He worked his way up through the racing ranks to become jockey to the Queen. Carson would one day win five jockeys’ championships and rode 3,828 winners in the UK including four victories in The Derby in a 34-year career. He became the fastest man on four legs.

The closure of Camperdown Park golf course in April 2020 marked the final chapter in a golfing story going back to 1959. A second public course was much-needed in Dundee. Over 70,000 games a year were being played at Caird Park which opened in 1923. Camperdown Park was bought by Dundee Corporation in November 1945 for £58,000. The park and its stunning neo-classical mansion is named after the Battle of Camperdown, off the coast of Holland in 1797.

A stash of images which capture life in 1980s Dundee have been newly digitised after lying hidden away for decades. The colour slides had been largely forgotten about. They had not been prioritised for cataloguing by the DC Thomson archives team because it was thought most had been supplied by outside agencies. But a recent push to reorganise the photographic collection at the Kingsway HQ revealed that many were, in fact, owned by DC Thomson.
