    Iowa 2nd Congressional District Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson held an in-person town hall in Mason City Thursday. It was her first in-person town hall of the new Congress, and voters pushed back on several of her positions. During her opening remarks, Hinson reaffirmed her support of many of President Donald Trump’s policies. She has been a longtime supporter of the president, with Trump having endorsed her campaign for re-election in 2024.

    The 22 counties in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District will have the choice this November between a well-established Republican incumbent and a Democratic challenger who’s running an entirely grassroots campaign. Polling and fundraising numbers so far show the district as majority Republican. According to data from the Secretary of State, Republican voters outnumber Democratic voters by about 20,000, and there are almost as many No Party active voters as Democrats.

    Residents of Hiawatha, Robins and northeast Cedar Rapids in District 80 will have the chance for change this November, as current Iowa House of Representatives incumbent Art Staed is eyeing an Iowa Senate seat in a neighboring district. District 80 voters have the choice between current Hiawatha City Council member Aime Wichtendahl, a Democrat, or first-time candidate and Cedar Rapids Republican John Thompson. Wichtendahl, 44, is a freelance writer and consultant with U.S. Cellular.

    Just two days before Iowans can begin to cast ballots in the 2024 election, 2nd Congressional District candidates Rep. Ashley Hinson and Sarah Corkery sparred over policies that shaped the prior session in Washington: immigration, abortion, and the economy. Hinson, a Republican from Marion, is the district’s incumbent, looking for her third term in the U.S. House. Corkery, from Cedar Falls, is running as a Democrat, and her campaign marks her first step into politics.

    Fourteen Republican members of the Iowa Legislature appeared in Charles City Wednesday to voice support for a lawsuit claiming the Iowa Utilities Commission acted unconstitutionally when it approved a permit for Summit Carbon Solutions' planned carbon capture pipeline. Known as the Republican Legislative Intervenors for Justice, the group is made up of lawmakers from both the Iowa House and Senate. They have grown from 19 members to nearly 40 in a matter of months.
