Crews were kept busy early Monday morning in Downtown Vancouver as they responded to a fire on the Granville Strip. The Vancouver Fire Rescue Services say they were called at around 3 a.m. to Granville Street between Nelson and Helmcken Streets. What began as a single-alarm fire, turned into a second-alarm blaze with heavy smoke billowing onto the streets and surrounding alleys. They got things under control around 6 a.m.There are no reports of injuries.

Police in Richmond are warning residents about an increase in cases of scams involving resident's jewellery. The RCMP says there have been several instances recently where fraudsters are either selling fake jewellery, or taking people's real items. The latter is done through handling a victim's jewellery and then swapping it for a fake without them knowing. Police say they received three separate reports involving this type of fraud in just one day.

Police in Surrey say two people have been arrested and now charged in relation to a "violent" altercation in the city on Monday night. The Surrey Police Service says that just before 11 p.m., officers were called to an apartment block on Central Avenue, near University Drive, after two men were "allegedly acting violently and had a gun.""SPS officers arrived and two men were taken into custody without incident.

Loblaw has confirmed that one of its Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Vancouver wrongfully charged someone a fee for a flu shot last week. The grocery giant says there was confusion at its store and pharmacy on Denman Street that led to at least one person paying unnecessarily. B.C. government guidelines state that everyone six months of age or older with a valid health card can get a shot free of charge. Loblaw says it has since corrected the issue and is working to ensure a refund is given.

It doesn't seem like lower interest rates are doing much to increase home sales in the Lower Mainland. Greater Vancouver Realtors are out with their monthly report, showing sales were slightly down in September compared to the same time last year. "Residential sales in the region totalled 1,852 in September 2024, a 3.8 per cent decrease from the 1,926 sales recorded in September 2023," GVR said in a release Wednesday.
