Calling for better pay, a better service, and for the employer to come back to the table, Metro Vancouver HandyDART workers held a rally as they officially walked off the job Tuesday. It's the first strike by these unionized workers in 15 years. Sam, a HandyDART driver, was among the dozens of other people on the picket line in downtown Vancouver.

If you heard an emergency siren coming from the North Vancouver waterfront, near the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, Tuesday morning, don't be alarmed - it was just a test. Liquid chlorine producer Chemtrade conducted a test of its emergency system at 10 a.m.This is the same company that issued a false notification last November while doing a chemical release emergency drill. First responders quickly jumped into action before Chemtrade clarified there was no actual emergency.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the BC Wildfire Service says over 85 per cent of fires are now classified as either "being held" or "under control."With 216 wildfires active across the province, only three new starts were reported in the last 24 hours. Ninety-four of the fires are listed as held while 92 are under control, according to the BCWS dashboard. Despite these classifications, the work is not over for the many fire crews on the frontlines.

A portion of 72nd Avenue in Surrey was shut down for a short time Tuesday morning after a semi-truck caught fire. The route was closed to traffic between 150th and 152nd streets around 11 a.m. However, as of 11:40 a.m., 72nd Avenue appeared to have reopened. The Surrey RCMP tells 1130 NewsRadio that 72nd Avenue was shut down due to the proximity of the fire to a power pole.

Economists say the Bank of Canada is on track to cut interest rates Wednesday. It's widely expected that the central bank will lower its key policy rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 4.25 per cent - which would mark its third consecutive rate cut. That's despite economic growth coming in stronger than the Bank of Canada expected in the second quarter. Statistics Canada says the economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.1 per cent for that quarter.
