MATAOAKA – After his excavator had a minor repair and some greasing up, Dan Wells with Empire Salvage started it up, raised its claw to the second-story rooftop and carefully probed the wall. Soon weathered bricks and rusty gutters were falling and dust was rising. The two-story Barger Street building in Matoaka was one of the larger structures in Mercer County's latest batch of demolitions.

bluefield – Two people died recently when the parked vehicle they were in was struck by a tractor-trailer traveling in the southbound lanes of Interstate 77, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department. The crash occurred around 2:38 a.m. on May 31 in I-77’s southbound lanes near the 5-mile marker, according to Chief Deputy J.J. Ruble.
