    Opening week of baseball season rarely fails to highlight where we were right or where we were wrong. The “we” not only refers to the Varsity Aces as we select our weekly North Jersey Top 25, but also the local baseball community as a whole. Teams that began 2025 in the top five generally performed as expected. On the other hand, there are five newcomers to the rankings, only one of which was on the “also considered” list entering the season (Midland Park).

    Old Tappan junior Seldon Kolkebeck, sidetracked by injury last season, leads an up-and-coming pitching staff that was outstanding the first week of the North Jersey baseball season. The Golden Knights (3-0) only allowed five total runs, and Kolkebeck earned wins against Bergenfield, 6-2, and Bergen Catholic, 3-2. Over 13 innings, he allowed three earned runs on seven hits and three walks and struck out 17.

    With the 2025 high school baseball season set to get underway next week, here are some of the top players to watch across North Jersey. Jason AmalbertDePaul junior infielder/pitcherAmalbert may be Passaic County’s most versatile player and he helps make the Spartans the favorite to win the county championship. Last season, he earned first-team All-North Jersey after batting .425 with seven home runs, 44 runs, 32 RBI and 22 steals. The right-hander also was 3-1 with 31 strikeouts in 26⅔ innings.
