The legal battle for Cohiba, Cuba’s flagship luxury cigar brand, has been going on for nearly 30 years, and a judgement has just gone in favor of the Cubans—again. This most recent ruling is a result of a suit filed in February 2023: General Cigar Company v. Empresa Cubana Del Tabaco d.b.a. Cubatabaco. General sought to reverse a decision made by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) in 2022, which ruled to cancel General’s Cohiba trademark registration in the United States.

Corto Maduro—the strong, Nicaraguan, single-sized cigar from Warped—is heading to retailers. It was on display at the PCA trade show in April and started shipping to cigar shops yesterday. The new smoke is an offshoot of the Warped Corto brand that debuted a decade ago. Now that it’s been on the market for 10 years, owner Kyle Gellis wanted to take it into darker, stronger territory.

New York City will soon have one less upscale tobacconist. Davidoff of Geneva announced that it will be closing its Brookfield Place location in lower Manhattan. Since April of 2016, Davidoff Brookfield Place has served as the city’s flagship retail store, set in a tony shopping gallery alongside other high-end boutiques such as Ferragamo, Luis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta. It’s scheduled to close in September.

Now, it’s known as the PCA (Premium Cigar Association) trade show, and there is no time of the year when so much of the premium cigar industry is all in one place. The trade show is a product pavilion where retailers from around the United States can peruse new and upcoming releases from cigar companies of all sizes, and Cigar Aficionado was there.
