Cigar Aficionado Magazine
Cigar Aficionado is an American magazine focused on cigars. Since its debut in September 1992, the publication has featured articles about various cigar brands from around the globe, as well as profiles of famous personalities on its covers. The magazine is recognized for its stance against the Cuban embargo. It was founded by Marvin R. Shanken through M. Shanken Communications, which has also published Wine Spectator since 1976. The current editor is Gordon Mott.

The Minneapolis City Council passed a law last year that prohibited cigar smokers from smoking for more than 15 minutes inside tobacco shops. To add insult to injury, there’s only one cigar shop in Minneapolis where smoking indoors is allowed. The ordinance felt targeted and unnecessary to cigar smokers locally and beyond, and now the shop, Anthony’s Pipe & Cigar Lounge, is fighting back.

The legal battle for Cohiba, Cuba’s flagship luxury cigar brand, has been going on for nearly 30 years, and a judgement has just gone in favor of the Cubans—again. This most recent ruling is a result of a suit filed in February 2023: General Cigar Company v. Empresa Cubana Del Tabaco d.b.a. Cubatabaco. General sought to reverse a decision made by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) in 2022, which ruled to cancel General’s Cohiba trademark registration in the United States.

Corto Maduro—the strong, Nicaraguan, single-sized cigar from Warped—is heading to retailers. It was on display at the PCA trade show in April and started shipping to cigar shops yesterday. The new smoke is an offshoot of the Warped Corto brand that debuted a decade ago. Now that it’s been on the market for 10 years, owner Kyle Gellis wanted to take it into darker, stronger territory.

New York City will soon have one less upscale tobacconist. Davidoff of Geneva announced that it will be closing its Brookfield Place location in lower Manhattan. Since April of 2016, Davidoff Brookfield Place has served as the city’s flagship retail store, set in a tony shopping gallery alongside other high-end boutiques such as Ferragamo, Luis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta. It’s scheduled to close in September.
