Peak-time rail fares are to be scrapped in Scotland in a £40 million-a-year pre-election giveaway weeks after ministers called a pilot of the policy a failure. John Swinney, the first minister, said the Scottish government would scrap the practice of raising train prices at busier times for good to “put more money in people’s pockets”. The shift was described by opponents as a cynical pre-election “bribe”.

The alcohol ban on trains is unenforceable and there is no evidence it has had an impact on anti-social behaviour, the boss of ScotRail has told MSPs.The Scottish government brought in the policy in 2020 as part of its temporary measures to deal with the coronavirus pandemic. Previously passengers could consume alcohol after 10am and before 9pm, and trains with catering services offered a range of drinks.
