Caltrans is asking for the public's help following a series of illegal hazardous material dumpings along U.S. Highway 101 in Mendocino County, the agency said Wednesday. On Monday, 19 barrels containing hazardous waste were removed from an embankment south of Leggett near the Empire Rest Area, Caltrans said. The cost of the cleanup and disposal of the materials is estimated at $30,000.

Marin County's water supply could get a healthy boost during wet years if a pipeline project initiated this week by the Marin Municipal Water District Board comes to fruition. On Tuesday, the board voted to approve a contract for design and engineering work on the Atmospheric River Capture Project, or ARC.

A Marin County community is mourning four Archie Williams High School students who died in a collision Friday evening. Tamalpais Union High School District officials on Monday released the names of the four girls as 9th grade student Olive Koren and 10th grade students Sienna Katz, Jocalynn Osborn and Ada Kepley.

The sale of Santa Rosa's Press Democrat looks imminent. The Press Democrat Guild is the local union for editorial staff at the Santa Rosa newspaper and it's sister publications around Sonoma County. The guild is bringing its current contract to an early end, a move they hope will smooth the takeover by Hearst Media. Phil Barber, a reporter and member of the Press Democrat Guild, said it was still a tough decision. "It was a choice of poisons in a lot of ways," Barber said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom this week signed new legislation that will provide more than $170 million in state funding to help prevent wildfires while signing an order aimed at speeding up the work by easing environmental permitting. The funding -- which the Democratic governor said was part of a broader effort to better protect communities ahead of peak fire season -- comes as the state is under extraordinary pressure after the January infernos that devastated Los Angeles communities.
