After a slow start to the season, Cardinal Newman is starting to find its form. The school’s girls softball squad has been playing as well as any team in the county over the past two weeks and got back into the North Bay League Oak division race with an 8-3 win over rival Windsor on Thursday afternoon. It’s the first loss since early March for Windsor (9-4, 4-1), which entered its second meeting of the season with Newman (10-6, 4-2) atop the league standings and winners of six in a row.

As we release The Press Democrat’s second prep softball rankings of the season, a big matchup is set to take place Tuesday that could cause some changes at the top. Casa Grande and Vintage, the Nos. 1 and 2 teams, respectively, will face off in their first meeting of Vine Valley Athletic League play. Vintage is the defending league champion but lost two of three meetings with Casa Grande last season. All three games, however, were decided by one run.

If it wasn’t clear before, it should be now — the baseball talent in the North Bay this season is about as evenly matched as it’s been in years. Cardinal Newman holds onto the No. 1 spot in The Press Democrat’s rankings, but its grasp is certainly not tight. No. 2 Casa Grande had a big week, going 3-0 against some tough competition in Acalanes’ Lamorinda Tournament.
