More body cams OK'd for Madera County deputies; agreement passed to protect well water in Chowchilla

What happened: At their Dec. 12 meeting, Madera County Supervisors voted 5-0 to enter into an agreement with LensLock Inc., to outfit sheriffβs deputies with in-car and body cams. The county will enter into a five-year contract with LensLock at a cost of $107,275. Deputies have had body cams since 2017. Police body camerasΒ are generally thought to improve public safety officersβ accountability and lower reports of police misconduct.

What happened: Fresno County supervisors moved forward a proposed quarter-cent tax increase measure that would be used to improve Fresno State University facilities, among other things, at their Tuesday meeting. The .25% retail transaction and use tax measure will be placed on the March 5 statewide primary election ballot.

What happened: At its Monday meeting, the Clovis City Council voted unanimously to create a Clovis youth commission that will be open to high school sophomores and juniors. City staff members will select up to 15 students, chosen based on their commitment to active participation and the ranking of their applications. Clovis students may apply between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30. Once the staff selects the top 15, the council will review and confirm the appointments.

Unemployment has risen by about 2%, according to the latest figures from May 2023, to 8%, much higher than that of the national average rate of 3.4%. Last May the unemployment rate in the county was 6.2%. Some 51,350 workers were employed in Kings County.
