Redwood High catcher Ethan Ferry figured it was just a matter of time until the Giants started putting some runs on the scoreboard. Redwood (7-5-1, 6-4 MCAL), mired in a hitting slump the first couple of weeks of the season, have perhaps put those woes in the rearview mirror. The Giants, defending MCAL baseball champs, erupted for back-to-back big innings en route to a 9-2 victory against Marin Catholic on a summer-like Friday in Kentfield.

For an 11th-grader making his third varsity pitching start, Marin Catholic High’s Colt Crum was the picture of poise Friday in an early season MCAL showdown against first-place Tam. In fact, Crum was nearly the picture of perfection. The wiry right-hander fired a one-hitter and retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced in a nearly flawless complete-game outing as the Wildcats snapped a two-game losing streak with an 8-0 victory against the Red-tailed Hawks in Kentfield.

In case anybody was wondering, Redwood High’s prolific-scoring guard Semetri Carr can pass, too. With time running out in Tuesday’s North Coast Section Division 1 basketball semifinal, Carr somehow escaped stifling triple-team coverage near halfcourt and rifled a pinpoint pass under the basket to Jake Post, who converted a layup for the winning points in Redwood’s frantic 49-47 victory against Amador Valley in Larkspur.

Marin Catholic High head basketball coach Mike Saia says sophomore guard Oliver Myers is almost obsessed about improving his game. “Oliver prepares for a game in a different way than most players,” Saia said. “He has a routine and he sticks with it. It’s rare to see a sophomore with that kind of discipline.”Myers’ obsession with fine-tuning his game paid dividends Saturday night in a quarterfinal round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs.

The Acalanes High basketball team had to be feeling pretty good about itself late in the third period of Friday’s North Coast Section Division I quarterfinal contest. Afterall, the Dons had recently won their first Diablo Athletic League title in 17 years and had rolled through the first two rounds of the NCS playoffs. Acalanes, the No. 7 seed, also held a commanding 12-point lead against No. 2 Redwood with barely more than a quarter remaining.

Tampa Bay's biggest day -- and race -- of the season and the track is having a interminable tote delay. Wow.
