I’m not sure what it is about being a senior, but suddenly it feels like spring semester is my last chance to be bold. Oddly, I felt this same sense of urgency in high school, only using my senior spring to experiment with my style. Disappointingly, I faltered on my promise to continue dressing up for class in college, stopping when it got colder three months in and soon after falling back on convenience as I ran — or scootered — between Galen Center, classes and meetings.

The fashion world seems to be changing faster than we can blink, starting off 2025 with the announcement that popular brand Y/Project is officially ceasing operation. The almost 15-year-old brand known for its Jean Paul Gaultier-esque resurgence of the scan of the naked female figure on neon dresses and the viral “floating” tank top straps closed its doors Jan. 9 due to its inability to find a new owner for the brand.

I’ve been putting off this article for a while. I don’t prefer to discuss politics in public, but I haven’t been able to get this idea out of my head. Regardless of its imprint in my brain, and while we make fun of him, Jaden Smith is correct: At some point, we do need to discuss the political and economic state of the world. This was my first Halloweekend since starting USC, as I’ve actually had the flu every year since coming. So, I decided to go all out. Planning eight and wearing five costumes, narrowing down what I wanted to be was harder than I thought. I’ve been in Japan for the past week, and it has been incredibly therapeutic. This semester has been chaotic, and as I ramped myself up for Big Ten travel and midterms, I desperately needed a taste of home to get me through.
