Upper Hutt Te Korowai facility: Man living in extended supervision facility charged with indecent assault

By Hamish Cardwell of RNZA man is facing charges for indecent assault and breaching extended supervision in Upper Hutt, after reports of suspicious behaviour in recent months. The man lives at “outside the wire” facility Te Korowai in the grounds of Rimutaka Prison and is subject to an extended supervision order, including an evening curfew (9pm to 7am). Corrections has been granted resource consent to expand the facility.

A Wellington musician convicted of rape can now be named as Martin Ditlhabi. He was found guilty in November of one charge of rape in a retrial - after previously being cleared of other sexual assault charges - and sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

The infrastructure sector says the government's move to increase its adoption of user-pays funding for infrastructure is a bold and necessary step, but a Green councillor says it somewhat misses the point. Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop told Morning Report on Friday there is a large infrastructure deficit. He is eying congestion fees, and greater use of road tolls, water metres and public-private partnerships (PPPs).
Ministry of Health confirms job loss numbers

The Ministry of Health has confirmed a loss of 123 roles at the ministry as part of the coalition government's cost-cutting measures. The PSA union said this equates to one in six positions at the ministry being cut. This means nine fewer jobs will go than what was indicated by the government in April. Some of the roles going were already vacant. About 250 jobs were being disestablished and 100 would have minor changes (for example the lines that some staff report to).

More than 200 public sector jobs are set to go in announcements from Waka Kotahi, Stats NZ and the Justice Ministry this afternoon. The Ministry of Justice is proposing to cut more than 100 roles, about about half of which are currently vacant. It has today begun a four-week consulting with staff about it's change proposal in a bid to meet government savings targets.
Case of man who went missing from Wellington ferry now with coroner

An investigation into how a man went missing from a ferry in Wellington harbour has now been referred to the coroner, police say. On Tuesday, a body was found by a dive squad in the search for the missing man. He disappeared from an early morning East By West ferry travelling from the city to Eastbourne one week ago. He was no longer on the vessel when it reached the dock, prompting a large-scale, multi-day search by more than a dozen boats and helicopters.
Training exercise to find someone lost in sea night before man likely went overboard

Coastguard and police ran a dummy run exercise about finding someone lost in the harbour at night the evening before a man went missing after falling into Wellington harbour from a ferry. A search has been underway in the harbour today since the man in his 40s fell from the East By West Ferry travelling from the city to Days Bay in Eastbourne early this morning. He was the only passenger onboard, and was no longer on board when the vessel reached the dock.

The Transmission Gully roading project is still unfinished and a new report says it may need a new builder to complete it. The Infrastructure Commission's long overdue independent review has found the public-private partnership (PPP) was not the "root cause" of the project's time and cost overruns. The motorway's construction costs blew out, its operation has upset environment regulators and the wrap-up of it is being fought over in court.
MSD accepts 200 voluntary redundancies - PSA

The Ministry of Social Development has accepted voluntary redundancy from 200 workers. The ministry (MSD) had called for redundancies earlier this month in the service delivery, Māori communities and partnerships teams, as well as those in human resources, policy, strategy, and communications. In a statement, MSD said in an ongoing effort to cut costs it has given the opportunity to staff to apply for redundancy. A total of 404 applications were made and 200 accepted.
