A fire chief who attended a tourist bus crash in northern Southland on Wednesday says it is not the first bus crash his brigade has been called to in that area. Three people were taken to Southland Hospital, one in a serious condition, after a bus carrying 17 people crashed on State Highway 97 between Mossburn and Five Rivers at about 3:45pm. The crash happened near Diack Rd, and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the highway was reopened at midnight.

A number of people have appeared in court facing charges in relation to large street racing meetings which caused disruption in Levin and Manawatū. Levin was inundated with cars on Friday night as about 1000 people attended a street racer invasion, with people doing burnouts, and police in riot gear responded. The gathering later moved to Palmerston North. Seven people were injured and 10 people were arrested.

After initially declining funding, South Wairarapa District Council has now locked in support for establishing a district-wide sports and recreation service. A majority vote secured funding of $80,000 to the cause per year over two years. At a meeting on Wednesday, councillor Rebecca Gray moved to revoke the earlier funding rejection which was decided during Long-Term Plan deliberations.

A South Otago organic farmer had a cache of illegal firearms to protect his crops – from rabbits rather than criminals. When police carried out a search warrant on March 4 at the rural lifestyle block belonging to Shaun James McVicar, 61, of Clinton, they found five firearms, more than 400 rounds of ammunition and cannabis plants and head. McVicar told police the guns were to protect his vegetables from rabbits and that the cannabis was for his own use.
