Nominations are due by April 14 and are anonymous unless otherwise requested. Nominations can be made through the online Teacher of the Year nomination form, according to the news release.

A Columbia man has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action for allegedly beating a person with a metal bat, according to court documents. Reco Fernandez Lomax, 43, is currently being held in the Boone County Jail without bond. Court documents allege he threatened to shoot the victim the next time they came into contact, after the alleged assault. The victim was familiar with Lomax and able to identify him, according to court documents.

The city of Columbia is inviting community members interested in applying for grant funding for Juneteenth events, exhibits or educational programs to a workshop on the application process, according to a news release. The workshop for applicants will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at the Walton Building, located at 300 S. Providence Road.

Four dogs were killed and three more were rescued after a house fire in Mexico, Missouri, Friday morning, according to the Mexico Public Safety Department. An off-duty Mexico firefighter saw smoke coming from a house on Friday around 11:44 a.m. in the 1200 block of Hendricks Drive, and firefighters found a fire in the basement of the house, according to the public safety department.
