“The story of this house is a long and winding one,” Heidi Caillier says, as she begins describing her latest project. In fact, it almost didn’t happen. In 2020, when the Seattle-based AD100 and AD PRO Directory designer first met the clients, a young couple putting down roots in southwest Colorado, she asked them which other designers they were interviewing to reimagine the ’70s farmhouse on their 13-acre ranch.

The project deadline was eight months. Even in the most favorable of times, with ideal conditions, completing an entire home renovation on this timeline can be difficult. But what about the renovation of two homes in eight months? Such was the brief for Seattle-based design and architecture firm Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, tasked with renovating a dated, 5,500-square-foot house in need of a full aesthetic refresh, and its counterpart, a 3,500-square-foot farmhouse, with a tight turnaround.

These special pieces, together with other one-of-a-kind objets d’art and decorative elements, come together in a way that’s rather poetic: There’s the nostalgia of classic floral prints and antique Persian rugs, coupled with the mystique of chandeliers in outlandish shapes, and a smattering of completely unexpected little nooks, including a pantry painted head-to-toe carmine red. “The home has a very moody quality,” says Caillier.
