The chief executive of Toby Carvery has issued an apology for "the upset that it has caused" following the controversial removal of a 400-year-old oak tree outside one of its London restaurants. The ancient tree, located in Whitewebbs Park, in Enfield, was chopped down on April 3 after Mitchells & Butlers, the company that owns Toby Carvery, received advice from specialists claiming the tree was dying and posed a danger to the public.

Greenpeace activists have scaled a building outside the Foreign Office in protest over delays to signing an international treaty protecting oceans. Four protesters unfurled a banner as they suspended themselves on columns on the King Charles Street Archway in Westminster early on Thursday morning. The group called for faster action from Foreign Secretary David Lammy in signing the Global Ocean Treaty, with the banner showing a turtle with the words "Lammy don't dally!".

Heathrow Airport was warned about its power supply in the days before it closed because of an outage, MPs were told. A triple murderer who killed three members of his family and was plotting a school shooting has been jailed for life with a minimum term of 49 years. Nicholas Prosper, 19, from Luton, who wanted to become a notorious mass murderer, was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Wednesday. He was jailed for life for the murders with a minimum term of 49 years – a total of 48 years and 177 days when the amount of time he has already been in custody is taken into account.

Cambridgeshire County Council showed an "entrenched mismanagement of safety" for the busway involved in the deaths of three people, a court has heard. Jennifer Taylor, 81, Steven Moir, 50, and Kathleen Pitts, 52, all died in separate incidents with Cambridgeshire Guided Busway between 2015 and 2021. A boy also sustained life-changing injuries. The busway, with a modified bus guided along a track, is a 16-mile route which uses old railway lines to link Cambridge, Huntingdon, and St Ives.

A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a six-month-old baby. Police were called to reports of concern for the welfare of a baby at an address in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, at just before 5.30pm on February 9 last year. The child, Archie Woodbridge, was taken to hospital where he died shortly after. Earlier this week, Kieran Humphreys, 32, was charged with one count of the murder of a child, one count of child cruelty and one count of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
