    On New Year’s Eve 1947, the Palmach, an elite unit of the Jewish Haganah militia, stormed the Palestinian village of Balad al-Sheikh, opened fire on families sheltering in their homes, and dragged men onto the streets before executing them in cold blood. At least sixty Palestinians, including women and children, were massacred that night. The slaughter at Balad al-Sheikh was an early declaration of Zionist intent, which sent terror coursing through Palestinian communities near Haifa.
