Opponents of Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson are orchestrating an effort to remove him from office citing objections including his switch to the Republican Party in September. In order for a recall election to take place, a petition must receive the signatures of 15 percent of voters eligible in the last election. Davante Peters, a businessman and former city council candidate, reportedly filed notice with the city secretary that he is gathering signatures.

The campaign of Gov. Greg Abbott announced that it raised $13 million in the last half of 2023. The governor’s campaign published the update a few days before an upcoming deadline to file paperwork with the Texas Ethics Commission. Abbott’s campaign stated that he raised $13 million from July through December last year. The House Homeland Security Committee in Washington, D.C. is scheduled to meet to consider articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on a charge that he has failed to secure the border. The hearing, entitled “Havoc in the Heartland: How Secretary Mayorkas’ Failed Leadership Has Impacted the States,” is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time in the Cannon House Office Building. The event is the first in an expected series of hearings on the matter.

Local media reported that special prosecutors from Henderson County have agreed to handle the charge against Smith County Clerk Karen Phillips that she interfered with her adult son’s arrest at her home. The case is complicated by the fact that Phillips’ husband sits on the county commissioners court. The Smith County District Attorney’s Office previously recused itself from prosecuting Karen Phillips due to its conflict of interest with Commissioner Terry Phillips (R-Precinct 3).

Attorneys for the family of the late former Dallas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson announced that they intend to sue Baylor Scott & White on allegations that staff neglected Johnson at a rehabilitation facility, which led to an infection that caused her death. The first registered nurse elected to Congress, Johnson represented the 30th Congressional District for three decades.
