In the U.S., the federal government has adopted a broad philosophy behind road building: the user pays. The money to build and maintain roads and highways comes from the general public, primarily through a gas tax that’s collected every time someone fills up at the pump. One major benefit of this system is that it’s efficient. The federal government collects this money, distributes it to the states, and the states spend the money as they see fit.

As more folks look to tighten their wallets by forgoing the restaurant and cooking at home instead, there are a handful of cookbooks hitting the shelves. Public education has been a focus at the Legislature this year, but lawmakers are not just looking at bills related to K-12 schools. Lawmakers are also considering bills about higher education. The Texas Senate passed SB 37, which would increase the state’s control over public Texas universities. The vote was mostly along party lines after an hour-long floor debate.

You would also want to look at consumer spending habits, which in many ways reflect how everyday people are thinking about their own economic futures.If people are optimistic, they may buy more. If they’re worried, they may buy less. But how do we make sense of consumer spending when there’s no one clear trend?
