0 Cannes Film Festival (Shy’m Net via Flickr) France’s star-studded film festival, Cannes, took place last week. While it showcased some incredible films, it left much to be desired in terms of representation and the treatment of female stars. The Cannes Film Festival has always been inspirational, with the greats of fashion and film collaborating to create a truly incredible experience.

0 The illuminated, joyful atmosphere of the house seemed inviting – a family sitting around a table, cheerfully chatting about their business, having a meal together after unwrapping presents that were left by Santa underneath the Christmas tree. The block of flats they lived in, located in a small, Polish village, was full of similar families, eating the Christmas supper and sharing opłatek- a white wafer that symbolises peace and good wishes.

On July 7th, Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte’s government collapsed following a stale-mate over migration policy. The divisive issue which caused the collapse was the flow of migrants into the Netherlands, which Rutte has been trying to reduce over the last six months. His aim was to introduce a two-tiered asylum-seeking system, by creating two classes of asylum-seekers, the first of which would be immigrants seeking to escape persecution, and the second, those seeking to escape conflict.

On the first of July, former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro was banned from running for president until 2030 by the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court on the grounds of abuse of political power and misuse of the media during Bolsonaro’s presidency. When Bolsonaro lost the most recent presidential election, he refused to accept Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s win, instead inciting mistrust in the electoral system.

Northern Ireland has long been plagued by its turbulent history, entrenched in sectarian conflict. The roots of this strife can be traced back centuries, but it was in the late 20th century that the situation reached a boiling point. The conflict, often referred to as “The Troubles” erupted between the nationalist Catholic community seeking Irish unification and the unionist Protestant community seeking to keep its ties with the United Kingdom.
