It’s too early to tell if Latte Lath will be able to fully recoup the MLS-record $22 million Atlanta United paid to transfer him from Championship side Middlesbrough. But if the Ivory Coast international’s first taste of action on this side of the pond is any indication, he’ll be a runaway success.

Is this really Atlanta United’s ninth season? I started covering the team in late 2015, ahead of their inaugural season in 2017. And a lot has changed. We’ve seen the highs of 2018, when Atlanta won MLS Cup. There have been lows as it barely struggled to make the preseason. Then, of course, was 2020, which everyone wants to forget completely. But 2025 feels different: expectations for this team haven’t been this high since…2019?

The suspense about Patrick Weah, Moises Tablante, and several new faces on the training pitch this preseason is finally over. As fans eagerly await transfer news about the senior team’s new Designated Players, Atlanta United treated fans to seven new signings for the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. Arif Kovac and Santiago Pita officially joined ATL UTD 2 after signing pre-contracts last July.

UPDATE — Thursday, January 16, 10:30 AMTom Bogert reports that Atlanta United has reached terms with Middlesbrough and is working to finalize personal terms with Emmanuel Latte Lath. If this deal goes through, Atlanta United will retake the top spot in all-time MLS transfer fees, supplanting FC Cincinnati’s $16.2 million purchase of Kevin Denkey in the same window.

Time is an interesting thing. In some respects, it doesn’t seem that long ago that I was in the Bobby Dodd Stadium press box in 2017 as Atlanta United played its inaugural match. Then again, being on the other side of a global pandemic does make that March evening feel like ages gone by. Atlanta, now heading into its ninth season, isn’t a new club anymore. But in many ways, it feels like it, given the turnover on the roster, in the technical area, and in the front office.

Atlanta United’s thrilling run in the MLS Cup Playoffs is over. Now comes the offseason, and needless to say, this will be a much different looking team in 2025: new general manager, new head coach (I don’t think Rob Valentino will get the permanent job), new players. Of immediate concern, though, is the club’s year-end roster decisions, due on Wednesday by 1 p.m. Atlanta has a host of players that are set to be out of contract or have option years for 2025.

The headlines poured in from all corners of the Internet after Atlanta United’s stunning 3-2, winner-take-all Game 3 victory over Inter Miami in the MLS Cup Playoffs’ first round. The Guardian called it a “seismic playoff upset”. ESPN billed it as “stunning”. “A crushing end to (a) magic season” was the title of Greg Cote’s late Saturday night column for the Miami Herald. Inside Atlanta’s quarters, “special” is the word of choice. “Listen, the last couple weeks, there’s something special.

Now, the MLS Cup Playoffs can truly begin for Atlanta United. After Josef Martinez’s second-half brace erased a 2-0 Atlanta lead and sent Tuesday’s MLS Cup Playoffs Wild Card match against CF Montreal to penalties, the Five Stripes won the resulting shootout 5-4. That earned them a trip to the best-of-three Round One against Inter Miami, the runaway favorite and No. 1 seed. And, of course, a showdown with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.
