    The Covid blues that took over tourism in Chandigarh seem to have gone as the city saw about six times more foreign visitors both in 2022 and 2023 than in 2021. Chandigarh saw over 65,000 foreign tourists from 2021 to 2023, according to the data put forth in the Parliament. According to the details, the number of foreign tourist visits increased post-Covid period which was in 2021. In 2021, the ‘City Beautiful’ saw just 5,451 foreign tourists.

    Facing an acute financial crisis, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation that had put up a proposal to increase property tax by four times in Chandigarh was unanimously rejected by the councillors on Friday. The table agenda was rejected during the General House meeting. It was stated that the table agenda was introduced without the approval of Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Babla and the BJP councillors too advocated that the same lacked the Mayor’s signature.

    Making Chandigarh free of slums and beggars, poor health infrastructure and a comprehensive policy for safety of elderly population and differently abled in the city, were discussed during the first meeting of reconstituted Administrator’s Advisory Council (AAC). The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh at Hotel Mountview on Tuesday. As many as 54 members from various fields participated in the meeting.

    The Centre said Monday that Chandigarh has not been designated as a World Heritage City after Congress Member of Parliament Manish Tewari raised a query in Parliament over the city’s status. Tewari, who represents Chandigarh in Lok Sabha, also sought the details of designated heritage cities in the country, and the details along with the number of heritage cities across the world, country-wise.
