The e-auction of 48 liquor vends held in Chandigarh on Monday drew a mixed response, with the excise department managing to auction only 20 liquor vends out of 48 during the e-auction held here. With this auction, the department earned a revenue of Rs 131 crore against the reserve price of nearly Rs 109 crore, witnessing a growth of nearly 19 per cent.

Two weeks after it was reported that a retired colonel was duped of Rs 3.41 crore reportedly through digital arrest fraud, another retired colonel has become a victim of a similar cybercrime. In the latest case, the retired colonel has alleged of being cheated of Rs 36 lakh by fraudsters who impersonated as Mumbai Crime Branch officers.

With less than 50 per cent of vends operating currently, Chandigarh is grappling with a significant shortage of liquor, with only a few brands available on liquor stores’ shelves. Taking advantage of the situation some liquor vends are selling beer, whiskies, and other liquors allegedly above normal rates as most of vends are struggling to meet customers’ demand. Liquor vends in several sectors 20, 22 and 27, NAC Manimajra, Industrial Area Phase I — which usually see rush were found closed.
