ABSTRACTThis article is a study of cross-border commuters between Slovakia and Hungary, an area with experience of border changes. Many inhabitants have common characteristics such as ethnic identity and language on both sides of the border. Previous literature suggests that these commonalities are related to “familiarity” with the other side of the border, which results in cross-border commuting.

1 Introduction Animals allocate energy acquired from food to sustain vital activities suited to their respective habitats and situations. Endothermic animals expend considerable energy to maintain high body temperatures, providing them with a competitive advantage in adapting to various environmental conditions, including fluctuations in temperature and the colonization of diverse habitats.

AbstractMicrotubule cytoskeletons play pivotal roles in various cellular processes, including cell division and locomotion, by dynamically changing their length and distribution in cells through tubulin polymerization/depolymerization. Recent structural studies have revealed the polymorphic lattice structure of microtubules closely correlate with the microtubule dynamics, but the studies were limited to averaged structures.

AbstractAutosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is commonly caused by PKD1, and mosaic PKD1 variants result in milder phenotypes. We present the case of a 32 year-old male with chronic active Epstein–Barr virus who underwent bone marrow transplantation with chemoradiotherapy at age 9. Despite a low-frequency mosaic splicing PKD1 variant, he developed severe renal cysts and end-stage renal disease in his 30 s.

We demonstrate a fiber-type optomechanical array consisting of elastically interconnected silica microbottle resonators with high-Q optical and mechanical modes. In total, 50 optomechanical resonators fabricated by fine glass processing are uniformly arrayed on a silica fiber. Evanescent coupling of a tapered optical fiber to an arbitrary resonator allows for highly sensitive readout and efficient actuation of mechanical motion at an arbitrary position in the array.

Skyrmions are topological solitons in two-dimensional systems and have been observed in various physical systems. Generating and controlling skyrmions in artificial resonator arrays lead to novel acoustic, photonic, and electric devices, but it is a challenge to implement a vector variable with the chiral exchange interaction. Here, we propose to use quadrature variables, where their parametric coupling enables skyrmions to be stabilized.
