Memphis police arrested a man Wednesday and charged him with stalking, aggravated criminal trespass and attempted kidnapping after he went to Mayor Paul Young’s house Sunday night. Trenton Abston, 25, jumped a wall leading into the subdivision in which Young and his family live, according to a Facebook post by Young. Memphis police said in a statement on Facebook that Abston walked directly to Young’s home after accessing the subdivision.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division announced Wednesday it will close its investigation into the Memphis Police Department and retract a December 2024 report addressing constitutional violations by police. The DOJ found police in Memphis used excessive force, engaged in unlawful traffic stops and routinely discriminated against Black residents after a 2023 investigation spurred by the death of 23-year-old Tyre Nichols when he was beaten by police officers during a traffic stop.

A Tennessee congressman said Wednesday he will call for an investigation into Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell following more than a week of traffic sweeps and detentions by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in Nashville. U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican representing the 5th District, alleged in a press release that O’Connell is responsible for “blatantly obstructing” ICE agents.
