Former Saginaw Heritage star Spencer Schwellenbach recovered from a tough first inning before throwing another quality start Friday for the Atlanta Braves. The Braves, however, could not pull out a win, dropping a 5-4 extra-inning decision to the San Francisco Giants after Tyler Fitzgerald scored on a walk-off wild pitch by Atlanta reliever Pierce Johnson.

The Great Lakes Loons threw the second no-hitter in franchise history Thursday, claiming a 3-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader against the South Bend Cubs. Because it was a Midwest League doubleheader, the two games were just seven innings each. South Bend walked off a 6-5 Game 1 win with a sacrifice fly by Jefferson Rojas to score Carter Trice. Loons manager Jair Fernandez argued that Trice left early.

Nouvel Catholic Central is returning to the state semifinals. The Panthers shut out Midland Calvary Baptist, 7-0, to claim a Division 4 girls soccer regional Thursday at Clare. Nouvel takes a 16-5-1 record into the Division 4 semifinals against Kalamazoo Christian at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Big Rapids. It’s Nouvel’s first trip to the semifinals since 2019, when it lost to Royal Oak Shrine. Nouvel took a 3-0 halftime lead Thursday before rolling to the 7-0 win.

Braden Buckley can finally take a break. The Merrill senior finished his high school athletic career Wednesday in a Division 4 regional semifinal loss to Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.
