1 INTRODUCTION The blood–brain barrier (BBB) plays a vital role in regulating and maintaining healthy brain function. Passive diffusion of solutes and potential neurotoxins from the blood into the brain is tightly restricted, with the transport of necessary metabolites controlled by specialized proteins.
