With similar weather to last week - clear skies, highs in the 40s - I aimed to get work done early the past few days to free up some daylight hours for some gravel riding. Besides my indecision on where to ride, Tuesday was smooth sailing. I planned to check out the Horse Ridge trails via some U.S. Forest Service roads from the Horse Butte area. According to Google Maps, it was a 12-mile ride from where I parked to Horse Ridge via country roads and Highway 20.

Gravel riding has become a popular alternative to the past decades' "opposing sides" - mountain and road - of the bike world, as well as a money-making expansion by the bike industry. With most gravel bikes - and cyclocross bikes - able to perform considerably well on pavement, good "gravel" routes and races often include a mixture of paved, gravel and dirt roads. Some may even have tame singletrack.

Bend's three-day annual arts, culture and community celebration returns this weekend with live music, art exhibits and a variety of food and drink options. Billed as the region's largest arts showcase, the festival will have works from over 80 local, regional and national artists on display at its fine art exhibit opening on Saturday. Pieces range from paintings to sculptures, photography and jewelry. Festivities will begin Friday evening with live music and food vendors.

An ordinance that would establish certain Birch Bay area roads with a 25 mph speed limit was postponed Tuesday by the Whatcom County Council. The purpose of the postponement was to allow residents that were unaware of the ordinance extra time to speak on the issue. #J307
